Planning success for Quantum PR client’s Energy Recovery Facility in Corby

25th September 2019

Congratulations to our client Corby Limited on its successful planning application to develop an Energy Recovery Facility at Shelton Road, Corby.

Northamptonshire County Council’s Development Control Committee granted permission for the plant, which will handle up to 260,000 tonnes of waste a year, on 24 September 2019.

The 23MW of clean energy generated by the plant will be enough to power most of Corby’s homes. With Corby and other local towns growing, the Shelton Road ERF will provide the infrastructure to reduce reliance on landfill and treat waste locally, reducing emissions from transportation outside the county.

Quantum PR has been closely involved with the project for nearly four years, since the developers first publicised their plans for the brownfield site – a former steel works on an industrial estate to the north of Corby.

Quantum organised two successful public exhibitions to provide local people with the opportunity to find out more about and comment on the plans. Throughout the planning process, Quantum provided media relations support to facilitate engagement with the local, regional and trade media on both a proactive and reactive basis, as well as ongoing media and social media monitoring to keep the development team abreast of any pertinent communications by local interest groups.

In addition, Quantum arranged a meeting with the constituency MP to enable the developers to brief him on their plans for the site and facilitated ad hoc liaison with Borough and County councillors and planning officers as required.

Quantum’s Managing Director, Charlie Vavasour, who led on the delivery of the communications campaign, commented: “We’re pleased that the Shelton Road facility has been given the green light and we’re delighted that our client, Corby Limited, can now progress its plans to develop a much-needed energy recovery facility in Corby.

“It’s been a long campaign but by carefully managing our messaging and taking a very strategic approach to when and how we communicated, we’ve ensured that the facts about the development and the benefits it will bring have been seen and heard by residents, key stakeholders and decision makers.”
